Chiropractic Treatment for Fractures
The term “fracture” is used in medical situations that deal with a break in a bone. This can range from severe full breaks to small cracks – anything that will affect the stability and integrity of the bone.
Broken bones can result from a number of different situations. Older people, women in particular who are suffering from osteoporosis or other conditions, may lose strength in their bones, making them more brittle and prone to breaks and cracks, even with only minimal impact. Young children are similarly susceptible, as the bones have not fully developed, and children often engage in physical play and activities that heighten the risk of injury.
However, car accidents, falls, and a variety of other daily dangers can cause bone fractures, and depending on severity, will require a range of short and long-term treatments. At Horst Chiropractic, we offer spinal adjustments and other care to help patients heal after fractures occur, and to decrease the likelihood of fractures occurring in the future.
Types of Fractures
Compression fracture is a term used when the vertebrae collapses, compressing the surrounding structures. Compression fractures can be so small that they sometimes go unnoticed, being attributed to back pain or other common complaints. Sometimes, compression fractures are considered to be pathologic, in that they are typically attributed to another underlying illness that is causing fractures to occur. In the case of compression fractures, Osteoporosis is often an underlying factor that needs to be treated.
Compound fractures are typically the most severe of bone breaks, as this is when a bone will actually break the skin due to the severity of the injury. In the case of compound fractures, there are treatments required, such as closing and treating open wounds.
Simple fractures are the most minor and easiest to treat, as they do not break the skin or damage any nearby areas. However, without immediate care, simple fractures can heal incorrectly and cause a number of other complications.
How a Chiropractor Can Treat Fractures
Chiropractors can help alleviate some of the immediate and long-term concerns related to fractures. A chiropractor may not perform physical treatments until the fracture has begun to heal and inflammation is reduced. However, a chiropractor can help with compression techniques that are useful in keeping the bone in place for proper healing. A chiropractor will also recommend comprehensive wellness techniques, such as proper diet, which will optimize the body’s ability to heal quicker. Chiropractors may also perform and instruct a patient on a variety of stretches and exercises that, if performed correctly and at regular intervals, will promote quicker healing and reduce the likelihood of future complications.
The benefits of seeing a chiropractor for overall health and wellness are numerous and well documented, but chiropractors are especially effective as first line and long-term treatment practitioners for bone fractures of any kind. While many kinds of fractures and severe breaks may require immediate treatment, a chiropractor can help rebuild strength and ensure proper healing, making the chiropractic process an excellent remedy for fractures and ensuring long-term good health.
