Common Injuries That Runners Experience

Below, we want to look at the most common types of injuries that runners experience. We can go over these in greater detail during your consultation at the practice. Our team will develop a chiropractic treatment plan just for you.
Plantar Fasciitis
If you have ever experienced serious pain or discomfort of the heel after running regularly, it’s likely a case of plantar fasciitis. The condition is caused by inflammation of the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue that connects the bone of the heel to the bones of your toes.
Shin Splints
Shin splints are another common injury for runners. This is the result of excessive stress on the shinbone, the muscles around the tibia (shinbone), and any connective tissue in the area. This can be especially common for new runners or when seasoned runners push themselves harder than usual.
Runner’s Knee
If you run a lot, you’ve likely experienced some case of runner’s knee. Runner’s knee is used to describe multiple conditions that affect the patella (kneecap). This pain of the kneecap is caused by repeated stress on the knee joint while running. The condition can also be caused by walking, hiking, squatting, and skiing.
Pulled Hamstrings
The hamstrings are three muscles that run along the back of your thighs. Athletes who suffer hamstring injuries will notice serious pain of these muscles. Usually, hamstring injuries occur when you do not warm up properly before a workout. You can also injure your hamstrings when your surrounding muscles groups aren’t strong enough or functioning properly.
Achilles Tendonitis
Tendons are the fibrous tissues that connect the muscles to your bones. When you subject the Achilles tendon to a lot of strain or ratchet up the intensity of your runs, you can cause Achilles tendonitis. Thankfully these injuries can be managed by resting and allowing the affected tendon(s) to recover.
Sprained Ankles
If you play sports or make a misstep, you’ve probably suffered from a sprained ankle. Rolling your ankle could cause serious harm to the joint, requiring you to keep weight off of the affected foot until you’ve healed. Repeated sprains could lead to more serious health issues.
