Tips for Pain Relief, Management, and Reduction at Home

 In Health, Pain

Countless people in the Temecula, CA area count on Dr. Nathen Horst and our team for regular chiropractic adjustments. Unfortunately, the Coronavirus (COVID-19) has changed the way many of us go about our day. The need for social distancing and sheltering at home means undergoing professional care for pain may not be an option for now.

Even though we might not be able to connect without patients in person for a chiropractic session, the team at Horst Chiropractic can still help. We’ve previously shared some tips for relieving stress and anxiety at home. Here are some ways you can reduce pain and discomfort from home, even in this time of social distancing.

Exercise and Physical Activity

Exercise and regular physical activity can work wonders for relieving immobility and stubborn pain. You don’t need a strenuous workout either. Light exercises like walks, yoga, and low-impact aerobics can help reduce discomfort.

Stretch the Soreness Away

In addition to exercise, a little bit of stretching can help reduce discomfort in tight muscles and sore joints. If you’ve come to us for chiropractic adjustments before, we’ve probably offered some tips on simple stretches to do at home for improved wellness.

Apply Heat or Cold Packs

Cold compresses and heat packs can soothe away pain in different parts of the body. Heat packs will help increase blood flow to the affected, while cold compresses will help keep the swelling down and numb severe discomfort.

Stay Hydrated

A good tip for health in general, staying hydrated can help you feel calmer, more relaxed, and improve the overall function of your body. Whenever you’re feeling thirsty, be sure to have some water.

Eat a Healthy Diet

Eating well is important for feeling good, and it can help reduce soreness in different parts of the body. A balanced diet can be challenging right now given the need to stock up on foods and avoid frequent trips to the store. That said, focus on whole grains, lean proteins, produce, and healthy fats when possible.

Make Your Living Areas More Comfortable

Your bed, your desk, your couch, and other furnishings in your home may not be as comfortable as they could be. See if you can do anything to make them more relaxing and accommodating to your pain. Fluffing pillows and being mindful of body position can minimize your pain.

Meditation

Mediation is excellent for feelings of anxiety as well as soreness in your body. Take a moment to meditate each day. It can help you reduce stress, which in turn can help reduce different kinds of pain in your body.

Deep Breathing

Taking a moment to take deep, mindful breaths is a common part of mediation. It can also be an important part of your at-home pain relief practice. See about taking time for deep, focused breathing a few times each day.

Get Enough Sleep

Body aches and joint pain tend to be worse when you haven’t had a full night’s rest. Be sure to sleep for several hours each night so your body can repair itself and you can feel recharged for the day.
