Top Superfoods for 2017
You probably already know all about kale and quinoa as great superfoods to provide you with vitamins and nutrients. However, there’s a brand new crop of superfoods that can boost your health. What are some of the new superfoods for 2017, and how do they help keep you in your best possible shape? Below, Dr. Nathen Horst shares some of the best superfood trends for you to add into your diet, alongside kale and quinoa.
Purple Veggies
You’ve likely heard that you should eat a variety of colors of fruits and vegetables. However, purple appears to be the new color trend for vegetables this year. There’s a whole crop of vegetables that are cropping up in various shades of purple, including carrots, cauliflower, asparagus and, yes, your old favorite, kale.
Studies have shown that the purple pigment means that the vegetable is high in antioxidants. Purple vegetables may also help your vision, lower your bad cholesterol, and increase your brain-power. Plus, let’s be honest, purple vegetables are very photogenic for sharing pictures of your deliciously healthy lunch!
Sacha Inchi Nuts
These South American nuts may soon replace almonds and cashews as your go-to protein snack, since they purportedly have more protein (9 grams) than other nuts. Even better, these nuts are packed with omega-3 fatty acids, which means they can help your heart stay healthy. This is particularly good news if you happen to be vegetarian or vegan, since many of the best sources for omega-3 fatty acids are fatty fish, such as salmon or mackerel. Sacha inchi nuts may be a great way for you to get that important nutrient from a non-animal source.
Watermelon Seeds
Remember when you were a kid and there was nothing better than a big slice of watermelon on a hot summer day? Well, those black watermelon seeds are poised to be the next big superfood!
One cup of dried watermelon seeds is approximately equal to 30 grams of protein, which is more than half of your daily-recommended intake of protein. The seeds are also packed with essential B vitamins, including niacin, which helps keep your skin, digestive system, and nervous system healthy. One cup of watermelon seeds gives you 19 percent of your daily-recommended intake of niacin. That same cup of watermelon seeds will also give you 556 mg (more than 100 percent of your daily-recommended intake) of magnesium, which helps regulate your blood pressure. Furthermore, you get 51 grams of fat, of which only 11 grams is saturated. The rest are mono-unsaturated, polyunsaturated or omega-3s, all of which can help reduce high cholesterol and blood pressure.
The new trend in superfoods for 2017 emphasizes new ways of thinking about fruits and veggies, as well as better options for vegetarians and vegans to get those all important vitamins and minerals that usually are found in greater abundance in animal protein sources. All in all, changing your diet by adding in some of these superfoods can give your diet a boost for this coming year.
